Flowers are a nice gift for a female boss.Wine for a male or female boss (but careful if they don't drink or something)Also it is nice to have a small mention of a birthday, not a huge focus unless youre a very small company who know each other well.It can be nice to have a 'guess who's birthday?" sign up and not say until the end of the day.

Unique art gift is the best present. I recommend photoartomation.com ( http://www.photoartomation.com/ArtWork.htm ).These guys convert digital photos into paintings of different art styles and print them on canvas. After you send them your photo they create a preview sample of your photo. It’s free. You can buy it if you like it. I sent a digital photo of my wife (I wanted to give her a special present for Valentines Day) to photoartomation and they turned it into three gorgeous art samples that I could preview online. I had a hard time picking one because all three were really beautiful. Although their prices pretty high I was not disappointed because when I received my order the prepared artwork was much more impressive then online samples. And my wife was just speechless…

Most of the places that I've worked have either had lunch delivered for everyone or bought flowers for the birthday person. While it is nice to have your birthday acknowledged at work, it's better to leave the 'special' part up to friends and family. I would be very careful about buying an actual gift for a staff member because it's hard to buy a special present without making it too personal. As far as bosses go, I've always bought them something for their office, such as a desk lamp or better coffee pot. Nothing personal or over $30. Also, I ask co-workers if they want to chip in so it becomes a group present. To avoid tacky, do not ever buy your boss 'successories.'Also, be very careful giving wine as a gift for someone at the office. What if they don't drink? What if they are a recovering alcoholic?
