Ear plugs ~ honestly! In the hospital it is hard to get any rest for either the mom or dad!

Nothing is worse than trying to come home from the hospital with a newborn and car full of gifts. It's very frustrating and exhausting!! Gift certificates fit in the purse and much needed for dinner with a newborn.

Something small because just remember they have to lug all of that stuff home. So I wouldn't get flowers or balloons. THats nice if you are going to see them at home. But I would get a card and maybe an outfit or diapers or something small that they aren't going to be juggling out of the hospital.

Take a gift card to a nice restaurant that they can pick food up from in those first sleepless weeks. They will appreciate it so much since they won't have to cook.

I'm really liking the ideas people have given you about food. I am expecting in December and know that if left up to my husband I would have pizza everyday for the first week I was home. Maybe you could pick up some good take-out and deliver it to them. Just give them a card in the hospital with a little note saying what you plan to do.

try n do a basket of toiletries that she may need, ie cotton wool balls, baby shampoo, bubble bath, cream, baby wet wipes, nappies/diapers, cotton buds a few newborn vests n a little cuddly toy, n anything else u can think of, then wrap it in clear plastic n tie with a pretty ribbon, its an original idea that someone did for me n it came in very useful.

gift card..........otherwise they gotta lug 500 ballons and 25 plants/vases home. then they gotta take care of these plants/flowers in addition to a baby! gift card for a restaurant even....somewhere that delivers to their home. or if the gift is for the baby, a gift card for a clothing store for them to use later.

Nappies is a good way to start and how about a hamper for the parents a they will get lots of guests in the coming weeks, packets of biscuits, nice speciality coffee sachets, some packets of sauce (they won't have much time to cook) and maybe a few things they can bash up a meal quick with, like pasta or a pre-made lasagna!!It's original and at the time I might have thought what. But having been there I think all these things would come in handy.

The best thing that anyone brought for us in the hospital was dinner from Outback Steakhouse. It was so nice to have something better than hospital food and my husband didn't have to run out to get it!

I loved when I recieved fresh muffins, hospital food is not the best so it was nice to have a fresh snack. I give that every time.

Parents always appreciate portraits of their families, children, grandchildren, etcIf you need an original gift try photoartomation (http://www.photoartomation.com/ArtWork/pages/03_Impasto.htm ). They convert ordinary photo into Art and print them on canvas.I am very pleased with the painting I received from photoartomation.com. The painting is absolutely beautiful! I will definitely use this site to order gifts for people--including myself!
