I have been invited to a friend's parents' house for thanksgiving dinner and the weekend. I've been told I don't need to bring anything, but I always like to bring something as a gift for the host in these situations. I think it shows that I really appreciate the invitation. Normally I would bring a couple bottles of wine, but his parents are really against all alcohol. Any ideas what I could bring instead?

You should definitely take a gift for the hostess, in this case spend only about $20.00. Try to find out what things the hostess likes and let them know this is especially just for them. It will be greatly appreciated.

Always something toward the meal is a good idea-offer to make sweet potatoes, etc. A pie or cake. A bottle of wine, champagne, etc. You could always bring the candles and candlesticks or some other decorative . Maybe you possess something they love--you can borrow it to them for Thanksgiving meal--china, glasses, a silverplated server. You can also simply offer some hustle to the muscle--set the table. Bring firewood and/or firestarter pines for their fireplace if they have one. The aforementioned would depend on time and how soon ahead of time that you discuss it with them. In a casual affair, rent the movies for the evening and bring the popcorn and snacks if they have a video player.

A nice centerpiece for the table is always welcome. As is candy, chocolates, especially. Hostess guest towels, a crystal candy bowl, any small gift is a nice touch. Best of all, send a thank you not after the visit to tell them how much you appreciates their hospitality.

Maybe bring a nice poinsettia plant as a host's gift -- they're pretty, easy to find, holiday-appropriate, and they don't require any effort from the busy host to accept (other than putting it down on a table and saying 'thank you').But in general, anything simple, presented graciously, is good.
