I am throwing a baby shower for my sister who lives out of town. Can I ask people to give just gift cards?

She is flying in so she will not be able to bring gifts back with her.

Why cant you ship them to her? The best thing is the gifts that your friends and family get for you!

i don't see any problem of asking the people t bring gift cards, they should understand. that means she can take the gift cards back home with her. and buy stuff for the baby there.

You could say that she prefers gift cards (because she will be flying). But, she will enjoy seeing all of the cool things that people pick out for her.

Wow.First of all, a family member technically should not be throwing a shower. And second, it's tacky to ask for anything, much less to baldly ask for a cash equivalent.

you can but people might be a little insulted. some people do not want to get gift cards because they feel pressured to spend a certain amount. if its really an issue have her make a registry and add the comments where to ship the gifts to. if they buy online it'll be really easy

Yes, I think that sounds very sensible. Make sure you put that - politely - on the invitation, and give the reason so others understand why. "As so and so will be travelling, gift certificates from this store will be gratefully accepted instead of gifts"

Asking for gift cards seems so tacky. I guess you could, but she might be able to bring most things back on a plane. I don't see how onzies and little socks can take up THAT much room. It's mostly family members that buy the big items like strollers, play sets or car seats. You could leave a note on the bottom of the invite that says, "Since Jane is flying, she may be restricted on the size of the gifts that she returns with, please contact me if you have any questions regarding your gift and I'll help you out"- then you can recommend gift cards... If you bluntly ask for gift cards, the baby shower sort of begins to sound like a fund-raiser.

Ask your sister to register at Wal-Mart, Target, any major store that sells baby items and list the stores on the invitation.Example: Jane and Baby are registered with the following retailers. This way she can pick up the gifts at a store near her home.Asking too many people to give a gift card/money makes it look like you are after the money. Perhaps you could ask close family members to mail/ship their gifts after the shower. And, please, make sure everyone receives a "thank you" note in a timely manner.

I would just leave it alone. Everybody who attends KNOWS she lives out of town, but they should be able to choose their own gifts. I can't really think of any way of telling people to get gift cards that wouldn't come across as tacky. Not only can she take the gifts back by plane, but you could ship them as well. A box can be checked just as easily as a suitcase.

I know a site that you can order personal gift albums that the person can pick out what they want. You pay a set price and it the album has about 50 different gifts to choose from. The person picks what they want out of it and it is sent to their house. All you have to do is pick out what album you want to get for them. A great gift idea, all of my friends and family love it.
