When I graduated this spring, I was dating a girl. We both moved home, and we have been talking on the phone a few times a week, and texting every day since. We have seen each other about one weekend a month, between visiting each other at our homes or at our old school while visiting friends.I bought her a GPS device for Christmas, and I'm planning on giving it to her this weekend and pretty much asking her if she'd be willing to make more of an effort to visit and actually build a relationship, and the GPS is so she won't get lost while driving (shes bad with directions). It's meant to be a "sweet" gift, but it's not exactly romantic (not in the traditional sense). I don't know that she would use it too much other than to visit me. I wanna get her something she will like/use, and obviously, she would learn her way after a few times driving. Should I exchange it? Or is there something maybe I could give her with it to make it seem a little sweeter?Oh, also, her mom gets very nervous about her getting lost while she is visiting... that's one of the reasons I originally got it.

I think that's a great idea! Good for you. She'll probably have a sense of humor about it, and hopefully like it enough to use it. A few road trips and she'll be addicted to it! That'll mean more fun for you guys. And if her mom's worried about her traveling, this should ease her mind a little.

it does sound "sweet" in the sense that it's personal and thoughtful. It's something that pertains to what you know of her. Yeah, it's not hugely romantic. It really depends on the girl. Some would appreciate it, some would want something like jewelry. Hard to say 'cause I don't know her. Maybe you could ask her mom??

Don't exchange it. It's a great gift and thoughtful too.

I am also directionally challenged, and would love such a gift. So I say go for it...you sound very sweet and thoughtful, and I hope she takes it in that spirit.

Since it's your money and you are the gift giver you can purchase your g/f anything you want...most gifts are given with the person's interest at heart or needs in mind. In this case, you chose to put effort into it. You are right, it's not exactly romantic but it's very practical and after all it's not Valentines Day. There is obviously nothing wrong with giving a practical gift unless she already has one and you know it. You could consider a small stocking with some personal trinkets such as her favorite candy, fruit, flavored coffee/tea(sample size), certificate of interest to her, a little poem or heart-felt card. What's her favorite little anything that you know she enjoys? Or, do a theme stocking...anything you think would be nice for a little gift that could be red or green. I did a huge basket up for my son(young adult) one year with mixed red, green, white shredded paper and a load of personal health items all in green and red. Are you creative?
