I think with all the news of toxic paint on toys and small objects that could cause choking hazzard is really getting out of hand! Sure a child's saftey comes first! To us when we were raising kids a child's safety meant keeping an eye on the child! I use to enjoy shopping for my Grand kids, but now it's a pain in the BUTT! When it was my Grand childrens Birthday or Christmas time it was also a surprise for my daughter what I got my Grand children. Now, my daughter asks what I bought them so that she can look up everything on the internet to see if it has a good rating or if it has been recalled! It's going too far and it makes alot of people panic! Hey didn't we all have that favourite Teddy Bear who's button eye would fall off and mom sewed it back on! I as a Grand parent and my parents as Great grand parents feel that todays young generation is brain washed with all the news articles and ratings on toys! It's come down to giving gift certificates for them instead of a toy from us!

Oh gawd, another grandmother who's bought into the media hype. With so many choices, gifts for kids are easier and safer than ever. Do your homework and turn off CNN.

yes you have to be careful but: these arethe same toys that many generation of kids grew up playing with and they all were fine. we cant wrap our kids up in bubble wrap and put them in padded rooms. I think that the same parents who are in such an uproar are also the parents that are buying their kids vidio games that plug into the tv. I cant really see how that can be any safer. We just simply need to watch our kids play and tell them no when they put things in their mouths.

It is really difficult. I don't know if we checked the toys we bought for my 9 year old stepson come to think of it. I will when I get home from work. Greed has taken over so nothing else matters. The bottom line for companies is the only thing that matters. People no longer make a difference. It's one of the consequences with a huge population. We are numbers. We aren't people to them. Look at how they treat their employees. That says it all right there. I don't mean to sound negative but this is how it is.

thank wallmart for this problem.. lolactually true, big industry and competition has forced companies to sell products cheap.. Wallmart can dictate to manufactures how much they will pay for a product... no joke... Now the manufacturer in China still spends the same amount to make a toy, but cant sell for cheaper than they make it.. they wanna make money too...so the good quality paint that was used before is changed to a cheaper lead based to save money so that chinese company can at least stay open...Big Business is harming us...

i'm actually not surprised at the lack of quality toys have these days. many are poorly crafted, have a short life span, and aren't particularly interesting to play with. remember when tonka trucks used to be metal and then they switched to plastic because it's "safer". i say they should go back to making wooden toys and rag dolls. those at least had value to children and could be passed on. you can't say that about bratz dolls or power wheels. i think the toy recall situation may shed some light on chinese-american industry and how both ends of that relationship operate. obviously america wants cheaper toys and china is more than willing to give them to us at the expense of safety. but it's our fault as well for giving into and promoting consumerism in children at such young ages.

well, i'm sure toys in general are actually much safer now than a generation ago. but there's also a point in minimizing unnecessary risk. watching your kid is fine, but when they're eating the aquadots that convert to a date-rape drug in the second you turn away, i think most of us would rather not have the aquadots. i'm not in a panic about my kids' toys, but if i know a toy has been recalled, it certainly gets sent back. honestly, my biggest concern about toys is how junky they've gotten. aisle after aisle of stuff that does all the beeping, singing, talking, moving, creating, and thinking for a child. maybe one tiny little (expensive) corner of the toy store for things like a good set of wood blocks and other creativity-sparking toys that don't make noise or tie in with a tv show -- so the child's mind can provide the sound track and the play script.

I agree with you. Parents today want to put their kids in a padded room, and the media feeds on the disaster stories. Our society is now very cynical, suspicious, and fearful. Not a good way to raise our children! Tell the parents to butt out of your shopping decisions. Tell them they can research the toys online later after the kids open their presents. We can't put American children in a bubble.

i think u r quite right, it is not the toy only , but also the food they eat, cartoons they watch everything has changed, and it is hard to get it back. according to my nephews / 4 & 8 / they feel realy happy when their mother or i tell them that we r going out 2 park or for dinner or any thing more than giving thema gift, because everything is regular and familiar for them, but by going out the learn something new - i think- how 2 play a new game 4 example, i c that children nowadays want us 2 b closer to them and to join them, also from the out side, in their big small world

yes it is very hard. especially because when children get older they can be trusted not to put small objects in their mouths. But I cannot treat my 6 year old like she is old enough for those kind of toys because I have a 4 year old and two year old twims and another baby on the way!
