| I have been looking through the gift recommendations for some time and I have seen many many people say that gift cards are great gifts. To me, all a gift card says is "I didn't care enough to be creative, think for myself, or pick up a phone and call somebody for help in buying you a gift but instead of actually giving you cash to buy your own gift wherever you want (cause THAT would be tacky or something) I am going to give you a piece of plastic that can expire and limits what you can buy yourself to the store of my choice"What do you think? Both in giving and receiving them. Why not cash if you can't decide on a gift? From a USA today article "TowerGroup, a consulting firm, estimates that consumers lose nearly $8 billion every year because of unredeemed, lost or expired gift cards."8 billion dollars spent on a few inches of cheap plastic. I'd love to see anyone who wasn't on the ridiculously profitable end of this one justify it. |

| Everyone does not have the time or inclination to be "creative". I would give cash rather than a gift card to keep someone from having to buy from a store of my choosing. Age may be the determining factor of how someone feels about getting either. A teen or younger would think cash to be a great gift. As I age I need fewer trinkets in my life and can use time with friends. |

| Although I'm not a big fan of gift cards, for teenagers especially, gift cards can be the way to go. Sizing can be difficult, stores can be out of stock in the requested size/colour, not all stores are nearby and some stores still charge for shipping (where I live, tax on shipping is allowed). The latter may put the desired gift out of someone's price range. I just tried to order something yesterday, only to find out that the shipping nearly matched the cost of the item! (It must be noted here, that said item was lightweight, small enough to fit in a business envelope and not fragile). Two words about calling people to ask for suggestions: good luck. This site in particular has many people asking what they should ask for as gifts. On the upside, when creatively used, gift cards can actually extend the gift, since they can be used during post-holiday sales. My strategy: when I do purchase them, I get them from shops popular with the recipient. Usually I purchase a "tie-in" small gift. For example, I know some nephews who will be receiving books, with gift cards to book stores attached to them this Christmas. I do not purchase gift cards with surcharges, expiration dates or any other short-changing clause. Cash works, by the way, but my system of gift carding seems just a little more personal.Whenever possible, I avoid giving gift cards to adults. Hope this answers your question. Have a merry holiday! |
