I have gone to several baby showers and what I usually get the expectant parent is baby clothes, a blanket, socks, or something else that the parent will need, like a baby monitor.

A crib or changing table. Carriage or cradle. She won't expect it and it will really help out.

I had someone give me a white basket (it was kind of big) and on the basket in wooden letters that were painted, was the baby's name. Filled with all the essentials that I needed for my baby. It was really cute, and now I use the basket for her books!

since this is for your sister i would buy a "big" gift, if $ is not an issue. pack N play, car seat, crib........... or i got a really cute gift: get a pink or blue string/ribbon, clothes pins to match a hamper and 8-10 outfits and pin them up with the clothes pins. string it along a wall or just leave it in the basket and when she pulls it up all the outfits are displayed. or a charm with a mother/baby is really nice.

You could put baby clothes(a lot of different outfits) on a string with clothes pins and just have someone help you hold it up. Ive seen this at a shower and it was a big hit.

What I used most with both my babies was a bouncy seat. Definitely a necessity.

If you know the name she's picked out, get the wooden letters (from any craft store or babies r' us) & paint them to match the nursery theme/colors. We hung ours on the wall next the crib.Put together a scrapbook page that your sister can 'stamp' her newborn's prints on. I made one that has all my son's birth info &"My 1st Prints" across the top. They make scrapbook frames as well & it'll look great on the nursery wall. Those are just some ideas, but put a lot of thought into anything that you can personalize. Anything made by hand is so much more special than bought straight from the store.

At my baby shower I got tons and tons of clothes and blankets. What I needed was bath stuff, lotions, more diapers (got some but not a bunch), diaper cream, wipes, thermometer, first aid kit, get the essentials cause everyone will be buying clothes (cause they are so cute). Everyone always goes to baby showers thinking "Oh someone else will buy them the essentials, I'll get them something cute instead." So buy her the essentials first, she can never have too much of it. Then after the shower take her shopping for something else she needs but didn't get.

I hate to say it, but the best gifts I got are when people BOUGHT OFF THE REGISTRY!!! I registered for what I wanted-- don't choose other things! And don't get clothes. Everyone gets clothes (except for socks, babies always need socks). A gift card to a store that sells diapers and formula would be a great idea, or a gift basket of medicine cabinet stuff that nobody thinks to buy (saline nose drops, infant tylenol, diaper rash cream, gas relief drops, some different pacifiers, etc). It sucks to have to run to the store with a screaming sick kid. Or, better yet, a cool-air vaporizer/humidifier. Every kid uses one of those when they're sick, and I've never seen one as a gift! Oh, my mom did the best gift-- she made all my son's crib sheets. It cost her about $2 a sheet, they were a breeze to make, and they're tons softer and cuter than what you would buy at the store. Plus you're CONSTANTLY changing sheets as baby spits up on them, you can never have too many!

make a pretty basket of things she will need from the first minute. Blanket, burt cloths, onesis, diapers, socks, booties, body wash, lotion, hats, glove... you can just get everything in neutral colors and it's actually something that every mom needs

Personalized gifts are always special. How about a personalized sign for the nursery that accents the décor? They have cute ones here: http://www.mysweetandsour.com/ The artist is a mom.
