I am one of those people who already have everything I need for the kitchen. So, I would put on items that I like, would like to have or need. Like MP3 players, portable DVD player, shoes, a new suit, a GPS, maybe a new car donation fund (I saw that on the sample registry on myregistry.com).

Well, what do you need? My husband and I had been living together for a while before we got married, so we didn't need much. I registered at Crate and Barrel and Macy's (an aside- Macy's gives you a free gift (I got a really nice carry-on bag by Swiss Army) and you get 5% back in a gift card when ever anyone buys something from your registry. It's free to use their service and I think it was really worth it). I put on ours: basic dishes and glasses to replace ones that had been broken during our last move, some serving platters/bowls that matched since I didn't have many serving pieces, and new bed linens because we have a terrier who loves to 'dig' in our sheets and put holes in everything. Mostly, I replaced things we already had with newer versions. I also added a bunch of 'decorative' items like jars and vases since we only had a few and we'll be buying a house soon.I also put the Kitchen Aid professional mixer on there because I knew I would never buy it for myself. I regretted it at first, since I never thought we'd use it, but we absolutely love it and use it all the time. I did get some reasonably priced fancy china (the platinum edge Charter Club. It was something like $8 a plate and I only got plates and bowls, not the full sets) at Macy's because again, I knew I'd never buy it myself and figured if I wanted to host a holiday, fancy china might be fun. My brother ended up buying the whole set for us, much to my surprise. It's beautiful and I'm really glad I have it.Crate and Barrel was good for low-cost stuff, most everything we had on there was $20 or under. I got gadgety things like a micro plane, an eggtimer, some cheese knives, cutting boards, some dish towels and placemats. All that kind of stuff.Mostly think about what you would use often. If you don't cook then don't get kitchen stuff. Linens are always good- this is you chance to get really nice sheets and towels. Cookbooks, other books, hobby books (wine tasting, cocktails, entertaining guides, guide to the local area, etc).Get a variety of prices- a lot at $20 and under, for people who can't afford much or like to give an assortment, a few in the $50-150 range for couples and people who can afford more, and a few at $150 and up for group gifts. Most people didn't get us things from our registry- about 70% I'd have to say gave us $100 either in cash or checks and a lot of people just got us gift cards to the stores where we registered which was great as both Crate and Barrel and Macy's also let you 'complete' your registry after your event date for 10% anything left (we got several C&B gift cards which I used to buy pretty much our whole registry). Crate and Barrel was a one-time coupon, Macy's had an end date.Don't forget to keep a list of who gave you what so you can write prompt thank-yous. My only problem was C&B tended to send things in more than one box, so sometimes I would have the thank-you all written and have to re-do it because another box would arrive and there would be more from the same person. Still, writing them as I got things really kept the chore to a minimum and everyone was really impressed they got their thank-yous so fast.
