They may not like it and want to return for something else. Instead, include a gift card for the price of the engraving. If there is no registry the couple wants cash. If you want something "personalized" so you can be unique then figure out a unique way to wrap the gift, not give a gift the couple doesn't want/need and potentially have all your hard earned money wasted.
