Something useful. Unless she is dandy in the money department. If so, buy a nice keepsake that can be kept forever by the child.

If they are religious, a first bible? If not, how about something to keep forever, a baby book? holder for the tooth fairy? baby's first photo in an engraved frame? piggy bank with the baby's name?

One of my favorite shower gifts was a gift certificate to a high end photographer. All the outfits and pacfiers just piled up, but the gc was something I would not have gotten myself and I have enjoyed the photos for years.

Does mom have a registry? If so, buy from that. I found the most useful items are the most important. I.e, diapers, wipes. Stay away from bottles, pacifiers, clothes. She'll probably get those anyway. Plus she may be nursing or not believe in pacifiers. A diaper bag filled with essentials is always nice.

It depends on what type of person she is - if she want's frilly pretty things then I would say outfits, socks, hats, stroller excessories things like that.If she's doesn't care about that kind of stuff then DIAPERS, DIAPERS, DIAPERS! and some wipes Smile

Diapers! Hardly anyone buys diapers and the new mothers always thank me for it! I usually get two packs of diapers and something off their registry.

I'd start with checking out her baby registry if she has one. I think you can find a meaningful gift no matter what your budget is. You can do a themed gift like diaper bag (diaper bag, small package of diapers, travel wipes, outfit to go in diaper bag, handi-bags, travel size: diaper rash creme, lotion, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, first aid kit). You can do a gift that is spread out over many months like autoship diapers from amazon.com ($27.79 per case of Huggies after 15% autoship discount, free shipping, no sales tax) and set up delivery at 1, 2, 3, or 6 month intervals. You could give a personalized baby blanket (after baby is born take blanket to embroiderer and have first and middle name and birth date put on it).

If you have a little time on your hands, make her a small simple scrapbook that she just needs to add pictures to as her baby ages. My cousin received one of these for her shower and I honestly wish someone had given one to me...instead, now I am wrist deep in a pile of scrapbooking material that I pull out and attempt to do whenever my 3 month old is asleep. I can guarantee it will be very much appreciated.

I would look over her registry and pick something off of there that every parent really needs such as a carseat. I made a diaper cake (you roll real diapers and put in tiers and decorate with ribbons and baby items) for my cousin ( I am going to be her baby's God mother as well). Everyone loved it and it will be usefull for her plus I threw the shower.

I would either buy some diapers.. good quality.. no cheapies! lol or clothes.. & when you do this, don't buy newborn, or 0-3 months, try to find something as the baby grows... like 6-9 months or 12months, etc..

one of the gifts that i got for one of my baby showers that i found very useful was : a baby bathtub, filled with all the essentials, undershirts, socks, sleepers, gripewater(for gas), soothers, wipes, diapers, bottles, bottle brush, baby soap, facecloths, towels, baby shampoo, creams for baby, bum cream, recieving blankets, all of things are things that you need everyday for the baby and you can never have too many of them i think the everyday things that mom will need are important to get because alot of people dont think of these
