I mean, we don't ask divorcing couples to send the gifts back that they got, so why should they be sent if the wedding is cancelled?

If the wedding is cancelled it really is the right thing to do. It's a little bit different with divorced couples who have been married for years and actually used all the gifts...it's a little harder to return those.

Yes wedding gifts should be returned if you cancelled the wedding. Gifts are given to celebrate your nuptial NOT to celebrate your breaking up.As for divorces...that just doesn't make sense and the argument that people who get divorced should give back all the presents they received is one that is purely for philosophical reasons.

Yes they should be sent back. Divorced couples don't generally divorce the nest day or week therefore the gifts they've received have been used, spent or are just old so nobody would expect that back...plus they DID get married. If you dont get married at all...you don't get a wedding gift...simple as that

Because the divorced couple actually went through with the wedding anyway. No one can tell whether a marriage is going to last or not. The hope is that they will or why else get married? If the wedding is cancelled, then the intent of the gift, which is to celebrate and help the couple getting married is pretty much nulled. I think the gifts should definately be returned if the wedding is cancelled.

Divorced people were once married. If there is no wedding there is no need for gifts and they should indeed be returned as soon as possible. What right do you have to keep them if there was no wedding?

If the wedding is cancelled, proper etiquette is to return the gifts. You're right, we don't ask divorced couples to return gifts, however, while ending in divorce the marriage did in fact take place whereas with a cancelled wedding it doesn't.

Yes. It is a wedding gift. No wedding, no gift. Think of it as "admission" to the reception. ; )And although you are right, if a couple gets divorced, at least their guest HAD attended a wedding and reception.

Absolutely! The gift was intended to celebrate the marriage. if the marriage doesn't happen they should be returned.Your comparison to divorcing couples isn't valid - they actually went through with the wedding.

Yes they should absolutely be sent back (this includes engagement and shower gifts too). Guests don't "ask" for the gifts to be returned..it is the proper and correct thing for the couple to do if the wedding doesn't go through. If the person is engaged 4 times..do you think they should get to keep and use gifts for a wedding that never happens? FYI...couples who get divorced within a year of their marriage should return gifts as well.

Yes, and when you get a "Divorce" a wedding does take place so therefore they were entitled to their gifts.
