"Is there a story in Florida folklore that explains why God would give any part of the lovely state of Florida to the devil???"I do not smoke crack or any other drugs. I just read a lot of obscure texts that have to do with the field of Folklore. Most recently I have been catching up on my American Folk tails and was just wondering if anyone here on Mythology/Folklore is interested in Folklore or just wants to know about centaurs and unicorns.I will tell you all that I found this story in a book titled: The rainbow Book of AMERICAN Folk tales and Legends BY: Maria LeachAfter I get a few more answers I will tell the tale. Thanks for your interest. ~M~The east coast of Florida is headquarters for hurricanes, and the reason that it belongs to the devil. The way in which he got it ia a Christmas story...All over the south it is a Christmas custom for the people to say, "Christmas gift!" to each other, and if somebody says it first, the one thus greeted has to give him a present.Well, once when God was walking around Florida on Christmas day, the devil thought he would like to have God give him a present. So he hid behind a stump, and when God came along he jumped out and yelled, "Christmas gift!"God was tricked for sure, so he said, "You can have the east coast." Then he walked on. Now the devil has lots of fun playing hurricanes up and down it!From: The Rainbow Book of AMERICAN FOLK TALES and LEGENDS by: Maria LeachThanks for your interest...Maggie

It sounds very interesting. I would like to know where you are getting this from. I have not heard this one but I doubt God would give anything of value to the devil.

-_- since when does it say Florida belongs to the devil? i mean, i doubt he would like it anyway. im sure he would rather have a place like Antarctica; its really cold, there hardly any life, and there is no light 90% of the time. anyway, i dont get this question at all.

Gremlins in the voting booths would explain some things. But I thought, the Devil gave it back and took Georgia instead.

Similar thing happened over here in England. God gave the Devil a place called Birmingham which later became known as the Black Country because of the evil black air that hung over the place. They have hurricanes there too.
