| Ok, so here's the thing. I'm on my HP desktop That i recieved for a gift last christmas. I'm wondering if it would be possible to grab the graphics card off of an old computer Gateway(not ancient, but old) and install it to my HP, and would have the ability to have dual monitors. Is this possible or are the drivers on the Gateway to old? |

| In most cases, yes. There are a few things to consider. If the Gateway is old enough there is a chance that it uses a PCI or AGP slot while most newer computers use a PCI Express slot. As long as they come from the same type of slot it should be compatible. As far as drivers go, check the manufacturers website. Usually cards are made by Ati, www.ati.com or Nvidia www.nvidia.com. In either case they should have updated drivers for the card that will work in your new computer. If you are able to install the card then you should be able to use dual monitors simply by right clicking on the desktop, choosing properties, and going to the settings tab. Once there click the monitor two icon and check the box that says extend my windows desktop on to this monitor. One thing to keep in mind is that new video cards are fairly cheap (some under $100). So it might be beneficial to simply buy a new card.Hope this helps! |
