Trust me anything you get him will be fine. Just seeing you will be the best gift he could recieve. The present he will want can not be given to him in front of his parents

Stay with the military theme. Get him a big Rambo-esque field knife. A nice quality one.

Dunno if it will work for you, but when my son graduated basic I got him a helmet bag (I had one when I was in, great for carrying stuff around) with all the military patches from me, his grandfather, his great-grandfather, and the uncles that had served sewn on it.Kind of a way of saying "Good job keeping with the family tradition!"If his family has a military tradition, it's an unusual gift that will remind him of his family.

GPS for his car, so he can always find his way home no matter where they station him.

Something small, like a necklace or bracelet that will remind him of you, but nothing too expensive or big that he will not risk taking into the field of battle.
