My girlfriend loves astronomy / star gazing etc. What would be a good gift idea around this?Or does anyone know of a good place to go in the UK (preferrably South East) like good observatories/museums etc. or where the UK's biggest telescope is?

Unless she already has one, get her a book about all the constellations, stars, etc. That way she can refer to her book when she's out stargazing and know exactly what she's looking at.You can also "buy" stars and name them. http://www.starregistry.com/

Well, you could get her a telescope, or if you don't want to spend as much, buy some good binoculars and a star chart or a book. Also, take her camping somewhere rural. There you can have some romantic time away and stay under the stars. Hope this helped. |

If you're in the south east it's worth visiting the Observatory Science Centre at Herstmonceux.

An Iridium flare on a warm summer night is recommended, if you are short on money. Maybe they also have nightly tours of Stonehenge, which might be interesting.

Get the latest version of the REDSHIFT computer program, which is a total astronomy suite with tons of multimedia.I recieved version 2.0 when I first got into astronomy back in 1994, and still use it to this day to track stars, comets, meteor showers, and the planets before I go out with my telescope. The 1994 version is still pretty damn cool, and I can only imagine that the 2008 version 6.0 is far superior.http://www.itreviews.co.uk/software/s444.htmIf you are on a budget, go looking for the REDSHIFT version 5.0, which should be available at a fraction of the cost of the newest version, but still GREAT software.http://www.redshift.de/us/_main/index.htm

Don't get star a named for her and don't buy property on the Moon. They are both scams. If she has been an amateur astronomer for a while, she probably has a telescope and star charts. Don't buy any accessories unless she has asked for specific item because you will probably get the wrong one. If she just starting out, check out http://mysite.verizon.net/frugalastronomer/index.html for suggestions.Red Shift is a good idea. Also Astroplanner and Starry Night. A trip to the planetarium or a nearby observatory would be nice. Also accompany her to a star party.

Send a special digital photo (something she can enjoy, something relevant to her interests..) to http://www.photoartomation.com and they will convert your photo into three beautiful art samples that you could preview on line and select one you like the best. It’s a really special gift! I actually bought one for my sister and it was the best gift i could ever give her.
