Is this really awful as a wedding gift?

If you never opened the gift it would be okay but because you opened up it you shouldn't do it. There are plenty of inexpensive things you can get them as a gift that may not be on the registry so try that. What about a nice picture frame. That is memorable and will cost you a good 20 bucks.
