| Considering your web site will grow and the products you are selling will increase, you will need an ecommerce solution. There are more than 450 shopping cart types with different features, some are specifically for selling images. Before choosing and implementing the solution you will need to examine and find out what successful webmasters in the same business are doing. For example, popular sites selling greeting cards and images are giving the visitor the ability to upload and sell their own greeting cards and images. They also offer an affiliate programme for promoting the products. The problem is always not the design but internet marketing, creativity and implementation of new and clever ideas since selling online is bound by a tough competition. Selling products on the net if not done properly can kill your website! Give enough time for brainstorming, planning, sketching, benchmarking, marketing ideas, and come out with a strategy and the proper ecommerce solution for your website and for your ideas. If you don't want to spend money and time, there is a free solution called oscommerce, get their final release at http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/downloads and install it to a folder on your website, e.g. name it 'products'. And place a link to the cart categories, e.g. 'buy greeting cards' and 'buy flash games'. While oscommerce as it is may not offer all the features you need, there are 100s of free contributions you can download and add them to your oscommerce store including the affiliate manager. Once you have a shopping cart installed to a folder you can easily direct site visitors to any product. Another powerful, popular and free oscommerce cart is ZenCart. However if you need an additional feature for ZenCart you may need to pay for it. You can download it at http://www.zen-cart.com Both carts support paypal express/pro, credit cards and other payment modules. They come with an installation manual and are supported by helpful forums. You will also need to sign up with a credit card processor such as PayPal, Nochex, 2Checkout, Authorize.net, etc, all affordable but none of them is free. However Paypal (popular) offers nearly free credit card processing on their website via the paypal and paypal express modules with a little percentage charge on transactions, i.e. only when a customer pays, both modules are supported by the carts. Check out the paypal domestic fee structure at https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-receiving-fees-outside And paypal also offers credit card processing on your website via the paypal pro without sending the customer to paypal site. Paypal pro subscription costs £20 per month plus the little percentage charge per transaction. If you choose to charge credit cards on your own site you will need to consider and investigate the security of your server and the cart, in this case I suggest a security certificate with ZenCart, Creloaded or similar cart for enhanced security.Tip1: Offer helpful and fresh content that attracts visitors to your site. Studies have shown that people are searching the Internet mostly looking for information, not products. You may consider also a shopping cart with a content director which is outside the scope of this question.Tip2: Checkout through paypal experss is sufficient: fast (2 steps), affordable and avoids monthly subscription. |
