You could create a basket that included he book and a number of the dry/ canned ingredients that are popular in the recipes in the book.

make a gift basket with it. pick an easy recipe, and buy the nonperishable ingredients. throw in a couple of kitchen utensils and a colander or basket to put the items in. put the cookbook in back, and arrange the items in front of it. maybe even a bottle of wine, depends on what you want to spend. a new kitchen towel works great to fill the bottom of the basket.

go to a specialty store that carries the ingredients and include a gift certificate.

Look through the cookbook and find a great reciepe! Then make a basket with all the ingredients minus meats and dairys.

How about some cooking utensils? Indian spices that would be neededfor the recipes? A trivet to set hot dishes on when you put them on the table? Actually, I would consider a $20+ cookbook by itself a nice gift from a friend. It is very thoughtful, because you considered his interests when you picked it out.
