It is hard to say without knowing who the gift is for. In general, try to bring something that is indigenous to your country (not something made in China).

Cris is right, buy your home products not things from China. If you are to be a foreign journalist in China, you must know foreign condition very well so why such question unless you are very new or you are not at all a reporter?Remember two classes of gifts......the lower & the upper for your business contacts, but for friends.....anything will do....not so expensive.

I know some world journalists. They give them their local materials or foods. If you are going to interview a person such as celebrities, political personalities, or others, a better gift is your local specialty. For taking surveys or opinions to other people, practice speaking Mandarin (I think you know already Mandarin). Thank the person you interview with a smile. Some Beijing citizens have a different taste for food and they want sweet or salty foods. You can also give souvenirs from your place as a way of thanking for their time but remember, they have a good moral value to you and they are very hospitable like the Filipinos, too.

Well, you will never go wrong with art pieces, for instance handmade portraits on oil, acryl or pencil. They really look classical! You simply select some nice photo - one of her most memorable ones or one taken in some beautiful landscape - and send it to the professional artists at http://www.paintyourlife.com to be turned into a unique portrait. It is a reliable address for all sorts of gift ideas for every occasion! They also do wonderful photo-printing on canvas in different designs as well as oil painting reproductions. Please take a look at http://www.photo-print-on-canvas.com and http://www.oil-paintings-reproductions.com for more information.
