I was thinking about getting this grocery card which gives me 10% back. Now that i think about it, could i buy gift cards at a grocery store and get cash back on the credit card? So basically i would spend $90 for a $100 gift card

Check the terms, but the odds are that gift cards are exempt from the 10% cash back. Gift cards are sold on a commission basis and very likely the commission is in the 1 - 2% range, meaning that the company would take a loss if it gave 10% back.

There might be restrictions on using the store credit to buy gift cards, since they figure you'd turn around and sell them for the difference. If you're getting 10% off anyway, why bother with the extra work?

Possibly, if the gift card can only be used in that store, they get a new customer, and in the long run they benefit. You probably could not have a card made out in your name, and ID would have to be presented to use the card. Most stores spend 18% of income or more on advertising, if they think about it, that could be the best advertising, as it would only cost them 10% for a new customer. I'd go for it, it is no difference to the store when they give discounts during seasons to get people into the store. Sometimes those discounts are even greater... If a clerk will not sell it to you, then Id go so far as to check with the Manager. Tell him you like the store, and think it is a good way to introduce friends and relatives, he could OK it even if a clerk cant.Go for it !
