I suppose because every wedding they have attended they have either given a gift or money, so they think that people will bring gifts to theirs, I agree it is wrong to expect a gift and certainly wrong to ask for money, but it does seem to be the norm, you say you always take a cash gift, so you are helping to keep the gift giving tradition going, I would feel rude turning up without a gift as a guest.

I think it is very selfish that people ask for gifts and money! Or set up a registry some where. My sister did the same thing but registered @ the Jones Store with a specific list of things thew wanted. And to top it all off my mother was wanting to know what I was getting my sister! I told her she was getting me being there for her. When I sent out invitations for my wedding we stated on our invitations "No gifts or money PLEASE!" we didn't want anyone to feel obligated to bring anything. We did receive some gifts and cash. It was totally unexpected but we were very grate full to who did this out of there own hearts. Not because we asked for gifts or cash. We wanted everyone to help us celebrate our union together no expect gifts or cash! What is wrong with people?
