I am going on a two-month exchange program to Japan this summer, and I have to bring gifts that are both educational and cultural about America.

Take them Bibles! Less than 0.5% of the population claims to be Christian. And a good portion of those who claim it really don't practice/go to church etc. They need the Gospel!!!

Anything very American. Keychains or anything with American flags on them would go over well.

Things that are specific to your home town & state are best. You don't say where you live, but look in the local tourist shops for ideas.I am from New Orleans and have in the past taken local coffee, spices, candy, crafts, and Jazz CDs with me to give away as gifts. I take with me ONLY things that are made in the USA. If you are staying with a family, get age-appropriate gifts for their children and nice presents for the parents. It is OK to ask your host parents in advance if a gift is appropriate for their child. Your parents may want to also send nice gifts to your host parents. Wrapping presents is nice, but don't use white. It would be like giving an American a present wrapped in black.Do take two albums with photos from home: Both albums should have the same set of photos: Your family, pets, friends, home, school, etc. are good images. Photos that are 5" X 7" are fine and you do NOT need more than 12 to 20 photos. Give one album to your counterpart (or your host parents if you don't have a counterpart) and keep the other to show to people you meet. Also take with you a number of small items specific to your town or state so you will have something to give when you find yourelf in exchanges of "token gifts". Check with the public relations offices of your school/school board, local university, area museums, the Mayor's office, and the state Governor's office (etc.) to see if they have logo items you can take (key chains, small flages, stickers, and things like that). You should call them on the phone, explain you are going to Japan on an exchange program, and then go to the office to collect the items (try not to count on them mailing the items to you). Your parent(s) employer(s) may also be able to provide a supply of logo items for use as token gifts. It is OK to use things NOT made in the USA as logo-item gifts, but peel off the stickers that say "Made in China". Hope you have a good trip!
