He is almost two, and has picture bibles, and I ordered an engraved bible as a keepsake. I initially wanted to write on the invitations that we didn't want gifts, or that guests could make a donation to our church in our child's honor. I want this to be about the event and not gifts. I invited people to share our celebration not out do each other with who gave the nicest engraved silver thing. What can I suggest to the ones who won't take "no gifts please" for an answer. We don't need a stack of crosses.

I would ask for things that he could use next year, like clothes or begginers reader books that are religous. Things that he will use... not things that are un necessary because you have all you need now

Why would you not write on the invitations that you don't want gifts, if you don't want gifts? And if you have friends who ignore your expressed wishes, it may be time for new friends!

Something we had made was a personised candle. It had my sons name on it and the date of the naming day. There are cups, silver bootees, what about a nice picture or cross stitch that can pe put on the wall and you can keep for a long time.

At my son's baptism his grandparents made a small deposit in his college savings account. If you have a guest ask for a gift idea, perhaps you could suggest that they donate a few dollars to your son's college savings account. Personally, I would feel very good giving a gift like that to a friend's child. It doesn't have to be a large amount of money either. Even $5 is a nice gesture.

I would suggest books. Suggest people choose their favorite book from childhood or a book that they love to read to their own children. They could add a note inside the book as to why they choose it and who it is from. This is a great way to start a "library" for a child. It is not cheap to run out and buy 20 or 30 books for yourself, but it is cheap for 20 or 30 people to get one book. This is minamal in expense, but very meaningful!!

Maybe a donation to a mission your church sponsors in your child's name.
