I have a friend getting married this weekend and she and her fiance aren't registered anywhere. When I talked to her she said they didn't really need anything or have room for anything in their apartment. I know where they are going on their honeymoon and was wondering if it would be tacky to give them a gift card so they could go out for a nice meal. Or should I just go with the old standby Target gift card instead?I never really considered cash....it just seems a little impersonal for a close friend.

I think that its perfect. I remember all the junk we got when we got married. I would have lived a gift card, but they didn't exist back in the Paleozoic Era.

if you don't want to do cash then I think the meal coupon would be the way to go.

If they didn't register anywhere, then they should (in theory) be happy with what they get or atleast not complain because their guests weren't mind readers. My husband and I got a ton of gift cards for Target and some cash for our wedding. We took all the cash to spend on stuff we wanted to do & gas money (we got more checks than actual cash- it was only about $450). We took some of the Target gift cards with us too incase we thought of something we forgot and found a Target. We ended up needing a new camera- our battery went dead and we forgot the charger and it was a weird battery no one sold. We used $100 of the Target cards and put it towards an inexpensive digitial camera so we could take pictures to remember our honey moon. We didn't register for much, so it's not like we had to use the cards to buy the left over stuff or anything. In short, no it wouldn't be tacky. If they don't use it on the honeymoon they can use it when they get home.

I think this is a fantastic idea. One of our favorite wedding gifts was a gift certificate to use on our honeymoon.

Sure, you can get the American Express gift cards and they are accepted everywhere, so they could use it in any way they like. Thats a really nice gift!

I'd like to get that. It would be nice not to have to pay for a meal and just be able to relax.

If she is a close friend, get them a real gift, something personal - an engraved or decorated frame, a personalized throw. You thinking giving cash is impersonal is odd - because a gift card is the same thing.
