I'm just a curious bride-to-be that got some interesting gifts at my shower (two garfield pillowcases were one of the gifts.. not a sheet set.... just pillowcases)! I ALWAYS buy gifts that a couple asked for (or give a gift card) because I want them to have something they really enjoy. What do you do?

I usually get something off the registry or buy something safte like towel set or candle sets. But to get something so youthlike is a little wierd.

Um, the stuff on the registry IS the stuff they like.I buy off the registry. I've registered for gifts before, and there is a certain anticipation in seen what you'll get, when, and from whom.

I always give cash, because I know my friends appreciate that more. Most of them (like me) only had a registry at stores (like Bed Bath and Beyond) where they can immediately return the items for cash. I figure I'm saving them the trip.

It depends. If the bride and groom have only picked upper end items on the list i might buy something else or a lesser expensive version of what they asked for. but i would never give them something silly like cartoon pillowcases.

: ) Sounds like you had someone very playful among your guests, or a real tightwad!Anyway, I've given in to mostly buying off the registry, though I still think it's a little pushy to tell your guests what to buy you and at what cost. On the other hand, I know some guests will always be in a quandary about what to buy, so having a list is handy. But I've grown comfortable with the idea of giving the bride and groom something they want, rather than something I think they should have. ; )If, however, all the stuff I can afford has already been crossed off the registry, and only the $$$$$$ stuff is left, they're still going to get what I think they should have!Hope you have a glorious wedding. Congratulations!

You do not have to go off the registry. If you know the couple well by all means get them something you think they would like regradless of whether or not it's on the registry. But there is a rule of thumb when buying off the registry. If they have say stemware from Bed Bath and Beyond on the registry and you find the same set in Walmart for less, you should still pony up and buy it at BBandB. The registry serves several purposes. It allows the couple to tell the guest what they need or want, it allows the guests to see what has already been purchased so no duplicates are given. And it allows for easy returns if the item has to be returned by the couple. If you buy it at a different store, the item will not be shown as already purchased if somebody else looks at the registry and it will make returns difficult if they try to bring the item back and find it wasn't purchased at the store they registered with.

I use the registry as inspiration and then go off and get something else, having looked at the registry and seen what the couple need or want.

I usually go off the registry because I know that they picked it out and its something that they really wanted. If I don't find anything that I really want to give them off the registry, I would just give them money cause then they could use it towards whatever. I mean what if they go on a honeymoon? They are gonna need some spending money.

I usually ask a couple if they have registered and if I can afford something on their list then I will buy it. Some lists i have seen are a bit mad though, one list had nothing under £1000 on it (the list included a 42 inch plasma screen, don't we all want one of them lol....) and so I bought a voucher for the shop where they had registered, I figured they could put it towards something, I NEVER give cash, ever.

We never buy off the registry, it's much more personal to choose something we think the couple will like. Are you sure the garfield pillowcases weren't some sort of inside joke or something?
