Should I have taken meeting my casual dates mother seriously?

Ok…I am seriously confused but just maybe the guy in this scenario is more confused. I was seeing a man off and on for the last 2 yrs. We saw each other on a casual basis which was fine because we knew we had an understanding. It was unconditional love. In December just before Christmas his mother was in town to visit and he invited me over for dinner. I admit I was a bit nervous and maybe thought this is getting serious lets see where it goes. I Took over a special bottle of red wine a bunch of baked goods and chocolates, dinner went well mom was sweet and threw bits of information in regards to she is a real keeper. I heard this and my heat froze, smiled and continued the conversation by changing the subject. Later on in the evening he took me to meet all his friends…ok just went along with it. 2 weeks pass and it’s my b-day he calls me wishes me a happy b-day but doesn’t invite me out to dinner instead he passes by to drop off a gift. The “gift” plates! I was so discouraged that my so called “lover” first didn’t make any kind of effort to take me out and secondly gives me such a cold gift as plates! A sexier gift would have been chocolates or bubble bath. I had to pretend to like the plates Oh, just before giving me my gift he threw guilt into it by saying he doesn’t even remember his own families b-days and the gift was to make up for all the times he didn’t remember mine. Anyway, to make the story less boring. I called him wanting to talk to him and he said he didn’t feel like talking and he will call back. He never called back! Instead he e-mailed me. I decided to take a break so I told him and he was all concerned as to why? Accused me of being a Lesbian, having a STD or maybe I was jealous because I saw him with another women! Needless to say he is history!
