we are not big wine drinkers, so we would not know a good wine from a bad one and it needs to be something small.

what about some nice boutique beers. Or if you do take wine, the people in the bottle shop should be able to help you choose.

1)A small gift basket you put together from the grocery store -(Bar B Q rubs for steak, "special" salsa, fancy chocolate bar (often on the top shelf of the candy aisle), specialty tea(I recommend RED TEA - pretty tin and caffeine free). Wrap with either tissue paper or clear plastic wrap, big bow on the top... 2)A color coded something - perhaps there was an inside joke about the "color" of something in a house. It always makes for a good conversation if the gift has a "double meaning" to the giver/givee. Of course, no adult themes. 3)No liquor. You're right to be unsure about picking wine. Not everyone drinks alcohol. 4)No candles or potpourri. 5)If these guys talk sports, something related to the builder's favorite team - it's cute to place a small keychain/tie tack of the giver's preference on the card or bow. The builder will remember their discussions of the "better team."You can put together a small gift basket in under 20 minutes at the grocery store. Not everyone gets the chance to truly browse, so the builder might appreciate new items....

Dessert. Drop by a bakery or an ice cream shop for a special dessert you think they might enjoy.

I agree with dessert, not everyone drinks alcohol even something as simple as wine. Get a nice fancy dessert and you can’t go wrong. It will show you cared enough to bring something without leaving the impression you brought something just to impress them. Enjoy your evening

I'd skip alcohol too, unless you know the builder likes a particular brand or type of alcohol.Guys don't seem to like trinkety things, so I'd stay away from key chains (who doesn't have a bunch stuffed in a drawer), pens and anything that comes with a bow. I love the dessert idea, but you didn't say whether you are going out for dinner or if it is at someone's house. If you are going out, I wouldn't take a dessert, bad form. How about something recreational - movie passes and a nice thank you card?
