when attending a wedding AND the bridal shower, do you just bring one gift, or would each occasion require a gift?

You are not obligated to give a gift, but I would give one for each.

I usually give two gifts. At the shower I try to give something more personal to the bride. At the wedding I get something for the couple. If I don't want to spend a lot of money, a silver picture frame to put their wedding picture in is always nice. Or a gift card so they can get something for their home.

well lets see here if you are good friend of the bride you bring a personal gift to shower and then wedding gift to wedding. if you are not that good of friends with bride and don't have money to buy for both you don't go to shower and you buy a gift for the wedding. or if you really want to go to the shower because it will be more fun then the wedding because you are not in the wedding you buy gift and go to the shower and make up reason you can not attend the wedding.

They're two separate functions, two separate gifts.

well, by tradition, the bridal shower is built around that very fact...showering the bride with gifts. so this one requires a gift. the reception, however, does not require one, but it's good ettiquette to bring one anyway. for the shower, get her something off the registry and for the reception, either a gift that comliments the bridal shower gift (kitchen towels and utensils for the shower, a mixer for the wedding) is always good. personally, i think gifts brought to a wedding is tacky-how do they bring them home at night? bring a check in a card instead. how much? at least the amount to cover the plate charge, plus some if your close to the couple. gifts NEVER do double-duty..one for both events.

I always give something for both. I do something off of the registry for the shower and cash for the wedding.

Two gifts, the shower gift is a more modest one.
