Is he just shy, or only looking for friendship?

I met this guy that comes to my work about a year ago. He always asks me when I am getting off work, always talks to me, says he appreciates all I do for him. He has invited me to a few of his work parties, since my work is one of his work's sponsors. We have fun, he talks me up all the time, introduces me to people, etc. I have no doubt he likes me.. but as a friend. He brought me a gift certificate from Bed Bath & Beyond, and gives me things for doing extra stuff for him through my work. The only thing that bothers me is that I always have to initiate contact- I email, and sometimes call him. I hinted about having coffee, and he said he'd call, but didn't. That was about a month or so ago. He gives me a hug and a kiss on the cheek we depart from each other's company. He is 40 and never been married. His lifestyle and job are one that keeps him moving & on the go. Should I just be happy with friendship & forget about anything else? I really like him.
