Hi, I am a international student @ US. Some nice people have arranged to accommodate international students in their thanksgiving dinner this time. I have no idea what are the traditions in thanksgiving / expectations from guests. I mean what dress code ? Would they expect gifts if yes what are suitable gifts? i have seen in movies people carry wine bottle but am not sure. Thanks in advance

you should offer to bring a side dish. dress nice, like dress pants or nice kakhi's and a dress shirt. presents aren't usually necessary.

I don't think you need to worry too much! Just show up and dress neatly. If you have an opportunity to ask about the dress I would but, if they didn't tell you anything specific assume that it will be casual. Go in trousers and a sweater or a shirt and blazer. If you don't have those then wear what you have and you will be fine! This is a fairly informal holiday for most people! All that is expected is a good mood and a thankful spirit! A good sense of humor is often appreciated! (some families or groups get a little corny and ask you to tell them something in your life that you are thankful for) This is a good relaxed holiday in most places. No worries!! |

no gift is needed, and as long as you are well groomed it shouldn't matter how you dress. thanksgiving started as a way to celebrate the friendship the native americans showed to the pilgrim settlers by helping them learn how to live (grow crops, what berries not to eat, etc.) in their new country. supposedly the pilgrims and native americans got together and had a big feast in the fall and that is why we do it. now days it's basically just a big dinner with your friends and family. it's all about turkey, (american) football, and the parade on tv.

I think a bottle of wine is an appropriate host gift for any dinner party, including Thanksgiving, but I doubt that anyone is expecting you to bring a gift. Wear something nice, but comfortable. The biggest tradition is the kind of food served - turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce... A lot of people watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade or American football on TV, so that might be playing in the background. Basically, though, you'll be going to a dinner party. Be ready to socialize and eat.

Most people like dress up a little for Thanksgiving. Jeans and a nice shirt (tucked in) would be OK. Khaki pants would be better. You need to make sure you will be comfortable in those clothes though. It is always thoughtful to bring flowers or a dessert. You can get a nice cake or pie from the grocery store or a bakery, there's no need for it to be homemade.

All of the other posters have offered great advice, so I will not duplicate it.You may also offer to help the hostess/host with the clean up/clearing the table for dessert (Trust me, I cook the big feast, it is always a welcome gesture that is often overlooked). You may also want to wear clothes that are a little loose fitting, as the meal is typically large. Many consider this a time to over eat. ;-)Have a great first Thanksgiving!
