We spend hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars for decorations, costumes, lavish foods and frivolous gifts. Think about all the money we spend on our holidays. Starting with New Years, Valentines and St Patrick Day. Why do we buy chocolate Easter bunnies, color Easter eggs and Easter baskets full of candy and toys. What does this has to do with the ressurection of Jesus? Mothers Day, Fathers Day, 4th of July and Labor Day is spent buying enormous amount of food to BBQ or going out to restaurants to gorge ourselves with food. By the time we get to October, we go into a frenzy and rent or buy elaborate costumes, decorate our homes with scary decoration and give out unhealthy candy to little children. We gorge ourselves again on Thanksgiving and when Christmas arrive, we really go crazy and go into debt for the rest of next year to pay for all the decorations, Christmas tree, food and unwanted gifts we gave out on Christmas.

It's all three. We live in a materialistic society. People feel the need to spend more and more money pretending that it will make them happy. We don't need to compete with our neighbors. Money isn't the key to happiness. People have heard it all before but most don't truly believe in it. I remember reading an interesting study that said tribe members in Africa are as happy as Upper-Class Americans. That says a lot about our lives, huh? I think that we buy too much stuff and waste too many things.

we do this because of tradition and to have something to look forward to. it is fun for kids to get presents and easter eggs (there is a story behind that, google it) and celebrate independence and all of that. Think about it. if we didnt do this, for christmas vacation it is just two weeks off, whoopee. but because of this tradition, we have gifts and happiness to look forward to, and get a break from work and school. i understand what you are thinking, but spending this money is to make others and yourself happy, to have something to look forward to in your life and to have a special tradition. enjoy every moment of it and see what kind of happiness kids have for these holidays.

Probably social pressure. Or maybe some people just enjoy doing it. When you get older you won't feel so pressured. You will probably spend the money on your favorite charities or help someone you know who has a personal need during those times. Basically, I find people pick and choose what they will and will not celebrate.

In England we had a really crap summer so I guess people are just trying to make the most out of the next big thing which, no supirses - is Christmas. I think in general everyone loves the Holiday season/s, even with it's whole comerciallity and non-family side, you just to put up with it becuase it's a reason to celebrate. People splash out on lavis foods and such becuase they feel like they have to - or becuase they want to. It's a holiday, why shouldt you?
