I have the same problem with my niece, So we all decided last year to give her gift cards for her favorite stores and then we take her shopping so tht she can buy whatever she wants and she still has money left on the cards after so that as new styles or other things that she wants come out she can purchase them then. Also a good excuse for a girls day out with her aunt. Another thing, which she asked for herself, is to start up a savings account for her to use when she gets out of high school to help her pay for college, a car, put towards a house or whatever she decides.

My daughter is in to jewelry making and sawing now. They have some really neat starter kits at Wal-mart in the craft section. Another idea from another mother was a digital camera for her to take when she is out with friends, that way you can go back an look at her pics and see what she is up to when she is out. I seems to get harder to shop for them the older they get.

I was a preteen only about threeyears ago =]I remember that when I was that age, I lovedto experiment with makeup, so try a really fun(but age appropriate) makeup set.Or you could try a 50 or 75 dollar gift certificate to Claire's (every girl loves that!) It's a cool jewelry store for basicallyany preteen/teen girl.Maybe a gift certificate to some cool stores like Aeropostale. But DON'T give her Abercrombie or Hollister giftcards, no matter how much she asks for them. Those stores are for older girls, and once she starts shopping there, she'll be brainwashed into a bimbo! Plus, they're expensive and she'll probably make you buy her all sorts of expensive, inappropriate clothing. Get her an iTunes gift card (if she has an iPod).Good luck! =)
