Do you think it takes away from the thought of giving a gift to the special people (mainly family) in your life? This year, it seems anyways, I have been hearing and seeing quite a bit of commercials for store gift cards as Christmas gifts to 'save time, hassle and/or money' of regular shopping.Just wondering what others thinks of gift cards as a Christmas gift.

I don't like them because too often there are too many fees and restrictions on their use. $8 billion in gift cards went unused last year. If you're going to give a gift card then you should give cash. It has a better chance of being used. I like the idea of a modest gift and cash the best if you are unsure of what to get someone. www.gifts.com for some ideas.

I really like getting them. I like that fact that I can go shopping on Boxing day, take in the sales and pick what I want. That way, no-one makes a mistake on my size or colour or I don't get two or three of something. I don't have to ask someone for a receipt and tell them I have to return the gift. Doing that just sucks.

Actually, I think people prefer getting them.. but it's not as fun giving them and often you will spend more on a gift card. You can find some inexpensive thoughtful gifts for $10 but it's cheap to give a gift card for $10. But yes, people like getting them better than gifts.

I like them because you can't really go wrong with them. Just way the person could buy something that they know they like.

Often times, many consider it to be not as personal.I think, for those who have everything that gift cards are wonderful gifts. My favorite gift card to give,is one for restaurants. The reason for this is:Sometimes there are special occasions and these gift cards in the long run save them money.Gift cards to everyday stores such as Walmart,K-Mart,Target,etc etc are great gifts also, because they can use them to buy necessities rather than something that is going to last them a limited time. So,i find that gift cards,in the long run save the person you are buying for...money(I would recommend getting them gift cards to a store/restaurant that you know they go to).I think it is a great gift, and i dont think it takes away from the thought. The whole idea is that you thought of them in the first place,no matter the gift.Besides, holidays are not about the gift itself.Happy Holidays,Sweetie!

i guess they're okay but i like giving unique or novelty gifts with them, once i gave a small oriental trunk to someone, it was decorative, useful and the person loved it, when they opened it there was the gift card and a wonderful and surprised look, it was priceless

I think they're rather impersonal and unoriginal. Plus as someone else said, you have to watch out for all the strings attached and fees, etc. But yes they are very practical, esp. if you don't know what to get someone. If it's for a friend, I'd go with a small gift (like an ornament with the year, or a hobby they like) and attach the gift card (in an envelope) to the small gift. So they still have something to open.
