Is this a good birthday-present for my boyfriend: subscription to a magazine he likes? and if so...?

he's 19 and when he comes around to my house he always loves to read this magazine that my dad buys on a weekly basis. i bought it for him once or twice "just because" and he appreciated it a lot. but ofcourse, it's just a temporary gift so the speak, since the subscription will end after some time...if i would get it for him then i still have to pick between a 6months-subscription (60$) and 1year-subscription (110$). i'm thinking of getting him the one for 6 months since the other one is pretty expensive. it's not that i can't pay for it, but we usually don't buy eachother "too" expensive gifts and valentines day is the week after that so... =) but then again, doesn't that come across as cheap since subscriptions are usually for a year?please give me some opinions =)
