My father-in-law (who lives in Maryland) is coming to visit us (in Utah) a few days after his 50th birthday. His wife wants us to throw him a surprise 'over the hill' party. All his kids - and his new grandbaby - will be there, and we'd like to make it really special and fun.Does anyone have any good ideas for decorating, gifts, websites, etc? My house is small, and it's very cold here, so it would have to be indoors - and preferably not too expensive!

When my mom turned 50 we got her a cake shaped like a tombstone and decorated in black and everyone wore black, it was funny and she enjoyed it.

Everyone should bring an over the hill gag gift. Like a huge tub of mints that look like pills and a label on the tub that says "Viagra." Denture paste, depends under garments etc. It will be huge laughs when he opens them!

Gag gifts are great like Rogain, Viagra coupons, a cane, Geritol, anything with fiber, Denture cream. As far as food, get what the guy likes to eat and keep it simple. I find it is cheap to feed people with baked Ziti and some salad.Good luck.

Gosh, if my family calls me "over the hill" when I'm 50 it will really hurt my feelings...are you sure of your FIL's sense of humor? I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but 50 is pretty young...maybe a "new grandpa" party, like a baby shower but with grandpa toys would be more fun for everyone...?

Why not try finding some retro treats - foods, candies and beverages that would have been popular when he was a kid in the early 60's. Maybe do a diner theme - serve meatloaf and mashed potatoes with green beans.

At my stepmothers b-day someone baked a cake to look like a tombstone and said something funny on it about older age...it sounds dreary when I write it, but it was cute.At party stores they have all kinds of over the hill stuff, decorations, gag gifts, cute books about getting older. The have a cane that has a mirror on the bottom.
