My father-in-law (who lives in Maryland) is coming to visit us (in Utah) a few days after his 50th birthday. His wife wants us to throw him a surprise 'over the hill' party. All his kids - and his new grandbaby - will be there, and we'd like to make it really special and fun.Does anyone have any good ideas for decorating, gifts, websites, etc? My house is small, and it's very cold here, so it would have to be indoors - and preferably not too expensive!

I wouldn't throw an "Over the Hill" party. Those are kind of dated, and the decorations (the black, the RIP, the coffins) are so unattractive. Besides, if you're the person turning 50, the last thing you want to have emphasized is that you're getting older. Why not do something creative, like "50 is the new 30"? Bake a cake shaped like 30, have gifts for a young man, etc., a subscription to GQ, one of those "half zip" sweaters, CDs of Rage Against the Machine, hair gel, etc. Would be much more fun and uplifting.Good luck, and God bless.

do a pics. of him on the computer with really old features and say this is what you have to look forward to. get some balloons and banners they say over the hill. also do this is your life type of game - have him sit there with a blind fold on and have him recall favorite smells or people from his past .than see if he knows what or who they are. the person has to make their voice sound funny so he does not know till he is out of guesses. i so called made that up just now. give him a basket of Ben gay. heating pads. and things of that sort and write on the card you will be needeing these real soon .

Funny - they have decorations in black for over the hill parties. You could have black balloons and stuff like that. The have websites of stuff that happened 50 years ago ... also websites of people that were born 50 years ago ... and songs that were popular 50 years ago.Does anyone have pictures of him baby ... growing up ... school pictures? You can put those together with songs on a Memory Disk that plays on the TV. Maybe add memories of him and his family growing and ending with his new grandbaby. It's kind of scary putting that many candles on a cake (the fire really comes together and starts to melt the frosting). But they do have the candles with numbers on them. What songs were popular when he was a teenager? What did they wear and how were the hairstyles? Good luck ... those are always fun! ... oh, and by the way. If you're 50 ... they are still fun! I wanted an over the hill party when I turned 50. I know I did't look or feel 50 and it was such great fun. I love to laugh and see people have a great time. It was such an accomplishment to become half a century old! All those gifts for "old" people were fun to receive. They were all inexpensive stuff and we all got a kick out of it and laughed - which is the whole point ... right?
