You always need pens and pencils in college. I always lose mine. Also blank CDs or a flash drive. External Hardrive. Extension cords if he's living on campus. USB cords. iTunes gift card. Gas cards are great! Laundry hamper if he's living on campus. Laundry soap, trust me it gets expensive after a while. Dryer Sheets. Tape to hang up posters. Stapler. 3-hole punch is VERY handy to have. Desk Lamp. Stapler. Money is always great. Nice digital camera. Ink Cartridges for his printer. Computer Case.

Paintings so he can style-up his room. Identify some of his true passions, get them photographed and send the photos to http://www.paintyourlife.com. The guys there can make very unique and classical-looking portraits or paintings out of simple photos! It costs less than you might think. This company also has a studio for oil paintings reproductions. In case you are looking for an affordable gift urgently, you can take a look at their 'stock on sale'. Visit http://www.oil-paintings-reproductions.c...

Maybe try putting together a "This Is Your Life" video for him by setting pictures to music and burning it on a DVD. I did one for my parents and it was a huge hit. They have watched them dozens of times. I made a tutorial site to help others do it for their family members. See the link below.
