|
|
| Hey guys, I am going to college in September in Connecticut and I need a car to come home sometimes, to get to work while in school, and for a bunch of other things. I am only 17 right now and I work part time, but there is no way that I am going to be able to afford a car on the salary I make. I got alot of money in financial aid and scholarships so I am trying to get my mom to put some money up for me for a graduation gift, but she keeps saying how she is struggling with money. But I got 28,000 dollars a year for finanicial aid and a 7000 dollar scholarship a year. I feel like I saved her so much money and she still won't give in. What am I supposed to do if I really need a car with no one to help me out? |

| You can make do without one, especially in your freshman year. A lot of students don't have cars. |

| Your mother doesn't owe you anything once you turn 18, so get that of your head that since you saved her money, you deserve a car. By the way, you wrote "saved her so much money", not "saved ME so much money", so I'm assuming that she's still paying the balance for your education. You are not in desperate NEED a car, you just want one. If you really want one, try to save up for a very cheap model (maybe $2k, which should be attainable by the end of the summer) and trade it in after a few years. Also, don't forget that you'll need to pay for insurance, registration, and fuel.I didn't have a car my first few years of college. I found friends who had them and used public transportation. I saved up and bought one of my own, and I didn't even get anything in financial aid or scholarships. |

| if you live on campus or close to it you may not need a car. You can prob hitch a ride from friends at times of need. There is always public transportation.PS Watch the school loans debt. $112k in debt or more when you exit college is a lot. Hope you are going to law school. |

| a car doesn't mean new car. you an probably get a junker for about 1000$, all it needs to do is get you from pt A to pt B. as long as it runs well and doesn't break down (nothing past 120k miles), its fine, you shouldn't care about body and other things that increase the value of cars. Its the type of crap other people don't want, like lemon cars (rust, water, collision). Just make sure its not broken. |
