It all depends on your wedding date.I used to work at Target and people would register like a 6 mos to a year before the wedding. Then when the wedding came around when the people actually start to buy the gifts for showers or the actual wedding, and we didn't carry anymore what they registered for. The the guests would get pissed because they wouldn't have many options to buy them what they want. I would say 4 or less months before the wedding.

seven to nine months before the wedding, even though invites only go out two months before -- is to ensure that shower guests as well as wedding guests will have access to your registry. If you forget something later, don't worry about it -- you can always add items after you've made your initial list.

I wouldn't do it any earlier than 3-4 months before the wedding. Nobody is going to be checking it that far in advance and you might registar for things the store might not carry anymore, something better could have come out, or your tastes could chanage. If you are having a shower then you want to have it done just before those invites go out.

Most couples I know who are getting married register as soon as they have picked a location and date for the wedding. The registry goes on their wedding websites in case people want to give you a gift at your engagement party (if you have one), or want to plan how much they will spend on their gift for you and your fiancee. These days it seems that guests will start purchasing and mailing out gifts even before the invites go out since no one brings gifts to the actual wedding anymore. I knew one couple who got a few presents a month before their invites went out. Another couple I know got a lot of registry gifts at their engagement party.I would do it as soon as possible, as a courtesy to your guests and family members. It just helps them plan better.

Totally depends on your culture. Jews buy engagement gifts off of the registry, so my fiancee and I have been registered since Oct or Nov and we aren't getting married until May 2009. In other cultures , people do not buy gifts off of teh registry until about 6-8 months from the wedding date.

I'm not getting married until June of next year and I'm not planning on registering until the beginning of next year because: a) the chance that they will stop carrying something I registered for; b) they will probably get new things in that I will want instead; c) I will probably change my mind on many of the things on the registry as it gets closer to the wedding.I realize that you can always change your registry, but my thing is that I feel that registering now would create a lot of unnecessary work (for me at least). If I register now, I probably end up changing it a gazillion times rather than just waiting until it's closer to that time and changing it once or twice. But that's just me, I think it's really a matter of opinion (just don't wait too long).

You can get started soon after your engagement. Creating registries isn't as fun as I thought it would be so I've been working on mine a little bit at a time. Be forewarned that some places switch styles every season so keep checking the registry to make sure the items are still available. Target is notorious for this and I've be warned by several people to not bother putting linens or decorative items on a Target registry because there is so much variability in their stores and they change their styles so quickly. However toasters, coffeemakers, etc don't change very often.
