Using shower gifts at wedding reception?

We are hosting the reception at home immediately after the ceremony. Is it acceptable to use the serving pieces for the food we will be serving? It would be nice for the people who gave them to you to see that you are making good use of their gift, and that you like what they got you. It would be a good idea to make sure those people that sent you those presents get a thank you card and you can also say something like...it's perfect i love it so much that we can't wait to use it so we are planning to use it at the reception...something like that.I'd rather see the presents i bought for a couple being put to use.
