Knowledge is a great gift at any age especially in the beginning of the life of a special child.

Eric Carle, the Very Hungry Caterpillar or any of his other books. The Little Red Barn,Guess How Much I Love You,Winnie the Pooh Books. Go to Barnes & Noble or Borders go to the children's section, than you have a whole section to check out! Have fun and enjoy!!!

I would start with books for babies. Pat the Bunny is a good first book. Any thing by Eric Carle, they are hard covered. The books you mention are good books, but for a baby shower they seem to be for use too far in the future.

Wind in the Willows is always a good classic, so is Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. I also really enjoy The Paddington Treasury. It's a bit lighter and humorous, along with A Child's Garden of Verses by R.L. Stevenson which is good for when the child is learning how to read and deals with all kinds of subjects and emotions.
