To buy for you instead of doing it yourself? Is a bridal registry or a baby registry just like begging people to hopefully buy the gift for you instead of buying it yourself?

I am probably going to get a lot of flack over this, but yes, I think that a registry is pretty much a not-so-polite way of asking people to buy certain things for your wedding or baby. Registries can be good in that it's pretty much spelled out what you want for those people who cannot figure out what to buy for you. The main problem I have with them is that most people make it a point to register with the more costly stores...which puts a lot of pressure financially on the gift buyers. I am able to afford high-cost gifts, but I am aware that not all of my friends and/or family can do the same...which is why I don't do a registry. A card, phone call, or visit is just as well with me for those who cannot afford to get a gift.

I think people do this because they are constantly asked "what do you need?", and also so they don't end up getting 3 toasters, etc. I find it easier to buy when someone has a gift registry....saves me trying to figure out what they need - and I'm sure they will like my gift if I bought it from their registry list. Usually, they list things from the truly expensive to affordable.
