I have been invited to a housewarming party for a friend (not very close, but good friends nonetheless) and I was just wondering....what is the proper etiquette for a party like this? Since I recieved an invitation, am I obligated to buy a gift? What kind of gift is appropriate? This is a young couple moving into their first home, they've been married about 6 years and registered when they got married. Help!

Wine or a plant is usually appropriate. If you know they are in need of something, you could get it for them if they need it. They may not be expecting any gifts...find out who else is invited and ask them if they are getting the couple anything.

I would take a reasonably priced bottle of wine and call it good.

A fancy loaf of bread, nice basket of fruit, a pretty throw banket...something that's "homey" yet nice. The wine idea isn't bad if you're sure they drink. Otherwise it can be slightly awkward.

I just bought my first house and can tell you that the gifts I received that I appreciated the most were the gift certificates. Unless you know exacly what the couple wants I would go safe with the gift certificate/s. I think that the couple wants to share their new venture with friends and it is polite to bring something..if you know them well enough a nice bottle of wine maybe. Like I said for me although appreciated in thought, the gifts of indoor herb garden, herbs or candles were things I could have done without.
