I have a friend who's a Jehovah's Witness and we constantly are debating about Christmas. He says "Jesus doesnt say celebrate His birthday, Christmas aint nothing but a merchant's holiday." In a lot of ways He's right. But I've grown so in love with Christmas over the years, I cant imagine not celebrating it. Because its not all about the presents (plus, I'm 21 and I've noticed the older I get the more lousy the presents become). But I just love the Christmas atmosphere, the movies, the christmas songs, and all other things that come with celebrating the birth of Christ. Take away the exchanging of gifts and I would still love Christmas. So do you view it as a merchant's holiday, or are Jehovah's Witnesses' just cheap?

The secular side og Christmas is totally commercialized, and More people think about Santa, reindeer, and snowmen, and lights and glitter. But while the secular world parties, the truth about a divine babe born to a virgin in a manger in a stable 2000 years ago, is unchanged! It's purpose unchanged! It's truth still pure! Thus started the beginning of God's plan for mankind's redemption began, and culminated 33 years later on a cross

Jehovah's Witnesses are taught not to be a part of this world. This is seen in many areas of their faith, for instance...one may serve in the military if drafted....but they cannot pick up arms to fight. The Christmas thing has to do with the portrayals of birthday celebrations depicted in the Bible. For instance, John the Baptist lost his head at Herod's birthday celebration. Christmas is considered like all of the others as a Pagan Holiday, and pagan holidays always revolved around a pagan God. Also, many faiths believe Christ was not born in December, but rather in August....it would have been too cold in December, for shepherds to have been in the field and for the Messiah to have been born in a manger. The death of Christ is where the embodiment of the faith lies, because without his perfect surrender, and the laws of justice being what they are, Christs life would have meant nothing.Jehovah's Witnesses are not cheap...they are obedient.

you are learning quickly for your age. short answer: kinda. it was adopted for commercialism by the merchant class from the ancient worship of saturnalia which most think came from the worship of tammuz. most of the xmas folderal came from him. wreath, mistletoe, nimbus, evergreen. we are not cheap. look at some of the cars we have.and the suits!:-)gramps
