One of my friends is getting married this summer and is moving to New Zealand afterwards, I'd like to get her something practical, packable and available in the US/online. And it'd be silly to get her something she can get more easily herself when she arrives in Christchurch; I'm shooting for something preparatory. Any advice for maybe travel literature? Or some other work by a great kiwi author? Any idea if it would be possible to get her a gift card (for say wine or artwork) that she would be able to redeem when she arrives? BTW, her fiance is a computer techy, she works with autistic kids and I met her at a social justice class. THANKS for your help!

As someone who did move to another country, I would have enjoyed a gift package of things from home. When you move to another country you have so many things happening and new ideas to absorb. You really learn by doing and integrating. I missed things from home. You are a sweet person to have this lovely idea, by the way!

I tried the gift card idea for a friend in Canada and it wouldn't work. The money exchange and the amount of the card did not translate.I say, give cash.Easy to take to her new home and she will need money to get settled. After she is settled, you can order something to send to her.Or just don't give a gift. Give a nice card saying that she will get a gift in a few months.

If you're going to get a gift card make sure you find out if it will work in New Zealand. I know of people giving vouchers for particular hotel chains in different countries and that seems to work but you'd probably have to look into which ones.Otherwise money might be a good idea- they'll have so much stuff to pack anyway it will be a lot easier.
