|
|
My Husband and I had our wedding reception yesterday and we received close to $500 in American Express and Visa gift cards. While, were so grateful to everyone for their gifts, I would much rather turn them in for cash to use toward purchasing a vacation. Does anyone know of a way to do this, other than selling them for a lesser price and losing the cash? If I'm not mistaken, they can only be used for purchases and not at ATM'S

If they can't be used at ATM's, I'd bet that your travel agent takes Visa. And if you're driving, gas stations take Visa. So do hotels. Wrap a rubber band around the stack and take your trip.

Just charge part of the cost and pay the rest with cash. pretty much everyone takes credit/gift cards now a days. Be happy you got anything instead of complaining that you want cash!

AMEX gift cards can not be exchanged for cash. You should be able to do a cash advance on the balance at a bank but there is a fee or percentage involoved so call the number on the back of the card to find out first.Or, for the vacation, they should take the cards at the travel agent, airline and hotels. Just keep track of the balances but you can use then anywhere that takes AMEX credit cards.

You can also book hotels on these cards, pay for dinners on your vacation. You can not use these at ATM's. The only other idea I can give you is to try to return them at a retail store who sells these cards. The people who purchased these for you had to also play a $3.95 fee each for these cards.

Since the gift cards have an American Express logo on them then you should be able to use it for a vacation...its just like having a credit card with a $500 spending limit....you can see if somehow you can transfer all of the funds to one card instead of using a number of different cards...Congrats!!!!

Your assumption is correct! You can only use them for merchandise or services (spa treatments and so on) and can only be redeemed for cash by selling them to people you know at the same or lesser price!. Oh, and by the way, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

This is true. Once a "gift" card has been purchased, it cannot be redeemed for cash.

I agree with everyone else in taking the cards and paying off things for your vacation that way...Or you could use them to pay your bills and use the cash you would have used to pay that bill and put it away for th vacation, it's the same thing.
