In December 2007 I bought a fragrance as a christmas gift for my mother at the Macy´s store in Santa Maria,CA. I paid the amount of $71.00 in cash. After that the clerk offered me a Macy´s card to receive a 10% discount refelecting in a month on my new account. I signed up for it. Until March 08, I heard nothing from Macys neither did I receive a Macys card. But I had a alarm on my credit report saying that I owe $165 to Macys. I called them and they found that they had the wrong adress. Also they said I owe them the money for the fragrance. I told them that I already paid in cash in December. They asked to send the receipt of the purchase that I didn´t have anymore since 3 months have passed.. So Macys insist that I have to pay for the fragrance that I already paid for. They give only credit for 2 months since they had a wrong adress. WHAT SHOULD I DO ? This is so stupid. Customer service is horrible. Please helpThanks for every responseLets make it simple. Price for fragrance $ 71.00.I paid in cash $71.00. Than I signed up for a macys card . The 10% discount would be credited to my card after approval.Than I get charged as I wouldn´t have paid for the item plus 3months interest.

Your story doesn't make sense... you say you paid in cash, and Macy's said discount will be reflected in a month on your credit card? How can they give you a discount on your card if you didn't use it? You receive Macy's 10% off if you are approved for the card and use it for your purchase.

This is fishy....but I and another friend of mine have had wierd experiences with Macy's as well. The best thing to do is ask for an investigation, but in my experience this only buys you time and then you still have to pay the balance. Sorry but it sucks, been there with the exact same company. Sad

RaymondF is right. You're explanation does not make sense. You are only able to recieve the 10% discount if you had put the fragrance on the credit card. You don't get the 10% discount on the fragrance if you've paid cash for it. I know this for a fact since I used to work for them years ago. I think you need to retrace what happened. You need to call customer service to find out what the charges of $165 were for. What items were bought and how much of it was interest and late charges. Perhaps then you can get to the root of what actually happened.Follow up: If you paid cash, and then charged it to your new Macy's credit card account for the 10% discount, then you would have been refunded the $71 cash, right? You cannot pay cash and then charge it to the new Macy's account (without the cash refund) since that would mean paying for the fragrance twice.

If this is on a Macys credit card as they say, tell them to send a copy of a signed receipt.

You wouldn't get the 10% discount on the credit card if you paid in cash. You had to use the card in order to get the discount. Your question makes no sense at all.

His question does make sense, in this way:When you sign up for a new store account at Macy's, they offer you, depending on the district and time of year, between 10-20% off new purchases using your new account for the first two days. While you do not receive your card within the first two days, you get a "shopping pass" that's a receipt printout with a scannable barcode on it, which is used to charge the item to your Macy's account in lieu of the credit card itself.Macy's accepts cash payments on credit accounts at the register, at any time, and you can pay off something on your charge account immediately after the purchase if you choose to. It sounds like he was interested in the new account discounts, opened an account, used his shopping pass to charge the perfume, and then gave the clerk a cash payment. If this payment was correctly processed, it should have shown up on your account statement in a month as paid in full, and additionally, there should have been $7.10 credited to the account, reflective of the new account discount.Instead, it sounds like some kind of error was made when processing the payment on the new account, and it didn't go through correctly, so the statement marked it as unpaid. The problem was worsened by an incorrect entry of the OP's address during the application process, leading to a delay in the arrival of statements. This can happen through clerk error, BUT, in order to approve the account, you have to verify that your personal information is correct by reviewing it and pressing "Enter" on the credit card machine's touchscreen. Therefore, any error should have been caught there, as people do make mistakes sometimes typing in the info. However, that's all in the past now. It's unfortunate that you didn't keep any receipts or records of the original purchase and payment, which I'd recommend doing for any new account until you ensure that billing is being correctly processed. You may want to try contacting the manager at the store where you made the account payment and perfume purchase, to see if there's any way they can assist with your customer service issues.Unfortunately, I'm not sure what else to recommend, as it was a cash payment and there's no paper trail as there would have been if you'd used a check or debit card to pay the account off.I'm a little confused as to where the $71 could have gone, if not as a credit to your account. You'd think they'd notice a $71 overage when closing up the drawer that night. Here's one issue I've seen before: did you ever have a Macy's card before, or have you ever had one with a store they've since acquired or is also part of their corporate umbrella, like Kaufmann's or Hecht's? If you did, and you paid off the account via account lookup by using info from your driver's license to find the account in the system (since you didn't have a card to swipe at the machine), it may have automatically credited this OLD account (even if it was inactive at the time) and not your new one, as there can sometimes be a time lag in the activation of a new account and its viability for payments. Since the payment presumably went through and you did at some point have a receipt for it, AN account must have been given the credit, barring some severe computer error.
