My daughter recently got a teddy bear hamster as a gift. We've had it for about 4 days and last night i noticed that his testes look enlarged. Does anyone know if that is normal.

lol, this is gross, but true- small animals like mice, gerbles, and hampsters have seriously large testicles. It's funny looking, actually. Just like humans, they get a build up, which causes them to swell up, and need to eventually release it. So, they masturbate. When they do, it looks like they're dying. They lay on their back and breathe heavy. I know this only because I ran to the vet freaking out when it looked like my daughter's hampster was dying. The vet told me what was going on. Boy was my face a beauitful shade of red. It was also fun for me and my husband to try and come up with a story to explain to my 5 year old what was "wrong" with her pet. lol

Its normal, they are actually huge. My male syrian hamsters testicles were the size of my friends 5 week old dwarf hamster. Its perfectly normal, it just means he's getting older, when their young you don;t really notice their balls, then all of a sudden they kinda just pop out and its a shock to many hamster owners. I don't know if its true, but I read somewhere that hamsters have the biggest testicles compared to the size of their bodies. Also his balls may look bigger if its warm, as when its warm he will hold them away from his body, whereas when its cold he will draw them closer to himself to conserve heat.So don;t worry about it Smile

Yes they are very big and noticeable. It is normal once they have matured. Lovely sight isn't it? habut at least you don't have to deal with a female and her smelly heats cycles.

Yes, I have a male Syrian hamster also, and he sometimes has bigger testes them normal. But I think it is o.k cuz it is summer now and it is VERY hot, so when males get hot there testicles tend to go away from the body, and when they're cold the testes shrink to the body. It probably just means hes hot, but if he starts acting weird or poops a lot and is not that energetic then I suggest taking him to the vet. I hope I helped, and GOOD LUCKP.S. I'm only 13 and know WAY to much about hamsters and this kind of stuff, lol. Anyway, GoOd LuCk again.
