I am 16 years old, and I currently have a cell phone on which I use pay as you go phone cards. when I got my phone, it was a christmas gift from a family friend, it was their OLD phone when I got it two years ago. Today, it turns itself off when it's fully charged, sometimes doesn't turn on unless I mess around with the battery, and even deleted the entire contact book by itself one time. Also I am currently with a different cell phone company than the rest of my family.I want to get a new cell phone, on a 1 year contract from the same company my family uses (thought they all use pay as you go). I have a job, which I have had for about 2 months now, and I could easily afford the monthly phone bills myself, as well as the cost of actually buying the phone. At the rate I am currently using pay as you go, it would be less expensive for the plan as well. Yet for some reason my parents won't let me get a phone plan. Am I wrong in thinking this is totally unfair? Also, I am being allowed to travel to and from toronto weekly by bus this summer, and cannot rely on my current cell phone to function correctly. So without a new phone I would have no way of contacting home.I would get one myself, but you cannot legally enter a contract when you are under the age of 18, so I wouldn't be able to sign up for a plan without one of my parents co-signing the contract.

Well if you can afford one yourself, just buy one! Who says you have to be on your parent's plan? Do a little research and find the best deal and go get it. You're 16.....who cares what they say??EDIT: I'm not sure if you have Revol in your area.....but if you do, get that. No contract, but there's also no annoying pay as you go cards. It's just a monthly flat fee.

You can't legally get one in your name because you're a minor. You have to be 18 to sign legally binding contracts (such as a cell phone contract)

Yes, that is very unfair. If you can afford one, it's your money. That would be like your granparents telling your parents what to do with their money. YOU worked for this money and I would say just go and buy one. That is pretty unfair.EDIT- The person above me is right. I would reccomend just getting a nicer and newer pay-as-you-go-cell phone.

yeah cause tell them since you're going to Toronto you need to stay in contact and if they still say no.go to the store buy one and get a card, but first check if it has a Sim's card if it does buy a phone buy that maker and switch cards and still get a phone card for extra minutes.I'm 13 and on a pay as you go but it is a track-phone and they have Sim's so if yours dies or you want a new phone you can get one with out having to change numbers so if they say no i would advise getting a track-phone.good luck =P

i think your parents are totally being unfair.they wouldnt have to help you out at all, so i dont see why their against it.but eventually your phone will probably just turn off and never come back on.it would be a ton better to just get a new one.i say, if you can afford one by yourself, just buy one. (:

Maybe they don't want you bound to a job for a phone plan. Maybe they don't want you on their plan. It's their plan and their choice. Why not ask to use your own money to buy a new phone for the pay as you go? Compromise.Ask to borrow their phone on your trip. I know you don't remember, but back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth, like 10 years ago, few people had phones. 15 years ago, no one did and somehow we did not die. That excuse won't fly with them.Telling them it's unfair will guarantee you don't get one, it sounds very immature to anyone with life experience (real experience, not high school). Because they will tell you life is not fair.....and I have found out, that is true.

you can get some great pay as you go phones you dont need a contract. What ever deal you were going to do on contract put the same amount of money on your pay as you go. Believe me they all seem great deals but never end up being so. My son left home 1 year ago at the age of 19 the first thing he did after getting a job was a contract phone. A year on he is so pleased the contract has finished and he is back to pay as you go, i wanted to say told you so but my my lip. He said it was a nightmare with hidden costs and just a pain. If you earn buy a good phone but dont get a contract x

You should be allowed to. If you want a easier way to get your phone activated then go to this sitehttp://www.freewebs.com/mobileamericaBut you have to be 18 or older to be in any leagl contract. You can get it in your parents name and they can pay the bill.
